BOSTON (CBS) – Fifty years ago, the BSO was performing at Symphony Hall when Music Director Erich Leinsdorf made the following announcement.
“Ladies and gentlemen. We have a press report over the wires. The President of the United States has been the victim of an assassination.”
The audience gasped as they learned of John F. Kennedy’s death.
“We will play the funeral march from Beethoven’s Third Symphony,” Leinsdorf told the stunned audience.
