Cape Cod Men Accused Of Trying To Scam $40,000 From Elderly South Dennis Woman

SOUTH DENNIS (CBS) — Three men on Cape Cod have been accused of conspiring to steal more than $40,000 from an elderly South Dennis woman.

On Friday afternoon, Dennis police executed a arrest warrant at a Harwich residence for William J. Woods Jr., 28, who told police that he is homeless. Woods, along with his father William J. Woods Sr., 53, and Joseph W. Lopez, 24, both of South Yarmouth, conspired to steal thousands of dollars from an elderly South Dennis woman, Dennis Police said in a prepared statement.

The men allegedly convinced the woman to write checks for construction projects at her home then failed to complete the work.

Woods Jr. faces several charges, including 13 counts of larceny over $250 from a person over 60 and one count of conspiracy. He is being held on $20,000 cash bail at Barnstable County Jail and faces arraignment Monday at Orleans District Court.

Woods Sr. turned himself in at Orleans District Court on Friday. He faces charges including 11 counts of larceny over $250 from a person over 60 and one count of conspiracy. He was held on $3,000 cash bail at Barstable County Jail.

Police detectives arrested Lopez on Thursday at a South Yarmouth home. He was charged with one count of larceny from a person over 60 and conspiracy. Lopez was released on his own recognizance.
