Security Bolstered For 2013 Head Of The Charles Regatta

BOSTON (CBS) -- Added security measures are in place for this weekend's Head of the Charles Regatta.

The Massachusetts State Police has a mobile command post set up in the WBZ visitors parking lot, which is across Soldiers Field Road from Artesani Park in Brighton, the main staging point for the regatta event. The tractor-trailer command post includes a high-tech control room with scanners and video monitoring equipment, several computer-equipped cubicle workstations and a conference room where public safety officials can gather in times of crisis.

After the twin Boston Marathon bombings, law enforcement agencies decided to beef up security for the two-day regatta, state police Maj. Thomas Grenham said. The first day of the regatta went off without a hitch, he said.

About 300,000 people are expected to attend the regatta over the weekend, which coincides with the Red Sox vying for the American League Pennant against the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park.
