Daughters Grieve Over Losing Their Father In Middleboro Hit-And-Run Crash

MIDDLEBORO (CBS) -- Devastated over the loss of a loved one, members of the Dutra family in Middleboro say they want the person responsible for taking his life to come forward.

"It's hard to believe he was taken from us in such an unlawful circumstance," Michelle Dutra said of her father, Michael.

Family members say Michael Dutra was riding his bicycle Friday when he was struck and killed in Middleboro just a few miles from his home. Police say the driver who hit him did not stop.

"There's no way this person could actually believe they didn't hit anything. They know they did. They took something from us, our dad," Shannon Dutra said.

The family said Michael Dutra had already suffered through a lot of challenges in his life. The 58-year-old was a liver transplant recipient who nearly died last year from complications but fought back. Now the family says his second chance at life was cut short.

"We fought for so long to keep him with us and he's come through everything. And then to lose him is not right. It shouldn't have happened this way," Shannon Dutra said.

Police say they are looking for an SUV with front-end damage.
