UNH Student Says She Was Assaulted On Campus

DURHAM, N.H. (CBS) - A 19-year-old college student at the University of New Hampshire fought off two attackers who tried to grab her wallet.

She was not hurt in the incident and managed to run back to her dorm room to call police.

"She was confronted by two what we think to be college-age males that got her attention by calling out what she believes was her name," said University of New Hampshire Police Chief Paul Dean. "Grabbed her by the wrist, the other one put his hand over her mouth and dragged her to the ground."

The student hit one of the men in the face. They ran without getting hold of her wallet.

The attack happened near Rudman Hall Wednesday night when the student was walking to her dorm room.

Students in the area Thursday told WBZ-TV they are very aware of trying to stay safe on campus.

"I would never feel comfortable walking around here alone by myself at night," said student Kara Hillyard.

All of the students who spoke to WBZ say they try to walk with friends or in well-lit areas at night.

"I guess you should always be kind of cautious at night but it would be nice to be in a more worry-free environment," said student Emily Latham.

The attackers were described as two white men wearing dark-colored hooded sweatshirts, shorts and sneakers. One of the males had long hair.
