Jeep Driver Strikes, Kills Pedestrian In South Dennis

SOUTH DENNIS (CBS) -- An SUV struck and killed a South Dennis man Saturday night, police said in a prepared statement.

At about 8:35 p.m. Saturday, Dennis Police were dispatched to the intersection of Upper County Road and Center Street in South Dennis. When he arrived at the crash scene, Patrolman Russ Francis found a man unconscious in the westbound lane of Upper County Road.

Francis provided first aid then the injured man was taken to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was later pronounced dead by medical staff.

The deceased man was identified as Steven Theilman, 52, of Center Street in South Dennis.

A preliminary investigation determined Thielman, accompanied by a second "male subject," had been walking north on Center Street approaching the intersection of Upper County Road moments before he was hit, the police said. Witnesses reported Thielman suddenly ran across Upper County Road and was struck by a westbound 2013 Jeep Grand Cherokee operated by Demion Bucknor, 28, of Dennis.

Bucknor immediately stopped his Jeep and remained at the scene. He had not been charged as of Sunday.

The investigation, conducted by members of the Dennis Police Department's accident reconstruction team, is ongoing. Anyone with information about the incident can contact Dennis Police Sgt. James Sullivan at 508-394-1315.
