Incumbents Win Mass. Mayoral Preliminaries

BOSTON (AP) — Lawrence's beleaguered mayor is getting a shot at a second term.

William Lantigua, the state's first Latino mayor, got nearly half the votes in a six-way preliminary Tuesday night. His closest challenger, city councilor Daniel Rivera, got about a quarter of the votes. The two will face off in November's general election.

Lantigua's first term has been plagued by controversy, including allegations of campaign finance law violations.

Holyoke Mayor Alex Morse, first elected at age 22, finished first in that city's four-way preliminary, with 45 percent of the vote. He'll face accountant Jeffrey Stanek, who got 42 percent, in November.

Newton incumbent Setti Warren won a four-way preliminary with 69 percent of the vote. He'll face Alderman Ted Hess-Mahan in the general election.

Several other Massachusetts communities held elections Tuesday.
