The crash happened on Route 85 at about 5 p.m. about a mile from the town's high school and middle school, where the boy was a student.

He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver was also taken to the hospital as a precaution.

A woman who lives near the crash described the damage to the car to WBZ-TV.

"The side mirror was hanging off, front end damage and the windshield was broken," said the woman who didn't want to be identified. "The bicycle was a little bit banged up."

The Middlesex District Attorney's Office is investigating the crash.

Alan Keller, the principal of Hopkinton Middle School, sent an email out to parents notifying them of the death.

Counselors will be available for students in the days ahead and all after school activities have been canceled for the rest of the week.
