BOSTON (CBS) — Take off your headphones off while you’re driving, that’s the message on new electronic billboards now along state highways.

It’s part of a public safety push aimed at distracted driving.

WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Karen Twomey reports

There are hundreds of message boards now up saying “Be Alert,” “No Headphones While Driving” and “One Ear Bud For Cell Use Only.”

Sara Lavoie of the Department of Transportation says a number of state troopers had noticed more and more people using headphones – which is illegal and dangerous.

Drivers over age 18 can drive with one ear bud in.

Lavoie says the concern is that people wouldn’t be able to hear emergency vehicles coming up behind them.

Drivers WBZ NewsRadio 1030 spoke to said it’s just common sense.

“Absolutely. From makeup to sandwiches to shaving, yeah, I think all of that should be enforced,” George said.

“There’s a time and place for everything.”
