NEWBURYPORT (CBS) ---- A local fisherman has quite a fish tale to tell.

Fisherman Catches 609-Pound Shark

Bob Cloutier landed a monster 609-pound thresher shark on Saturday, just a tad shy of the state record for threshers.

"We knew he was big when we saw him jump," Cloutier said.

The state record is 630 pounds, caught off Martha's Vineyard in 2011.

Cloutier says it took him and his friends over 2 hours to reel in the catch.

"A couple of fishermen up this way caught one of the biggest sharks I've seen in this area in a long time," Harbormaster Pual Hogg said. "It's pretty uncommon for this area here in Newburyport."

Cloutier is from Dracut but owns a fishing charter service out of the Newburyport area.

The catch was cut up into steaks and given away, Cloutier said.
