Police: Hatchet-Wielding Man Shot By Officers In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) — Police in Springfield say officers shot and wounded a man who allegedly came at them with a hatchet.

Two officers were hurt in the incident Monday night at a home on Irvington Street, but they did not require hospitalization.

Sgt. John Delaney says three officers responding to a call heard a woman screaming for help and a man shouting threats.

When the officers entered the home they encountered the man, later identified as 28-year-old Nicholas Mondel, wielding the hatchet. Delaney says two of the officers fired their weapons to stop the attack.

Mondel was taken to Baystate Medical Center where he's in serious but stable condition. Delaney says Mondel faces charges of assault with intent to murder and assault and battery on a police officer.
