NH Law Will Require 6-Year-Olds To Be In Car Seats

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) — Gov. Maggie Hassan has signed into a law a measure requiring a child safety restraint for 6-year-old children riding in vehicles, unless they are of a certain height.

Under current law, children under age 6 and shorter than 55 inches (4 feet 7 inches) have to sit in a child safety restraint.

Under the new law, 6-year-olds must use the safety restraint unless they are at least 57 inches tall (4 feet 9 inches).

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s policy is to require children to wear the restraints up to age 8, and 4 feet 9 inches tall. The Telegraph reports the impetus for the bill was to bring New Hampshire’s law closer to the federal guideline.
