Apparent Drowning Investigated In Mashpee

MASHPEE, Mass. (CBS) -- Public safety officials are investigating an apparent drowning at Ashumet Pond.

At about 5 p.m., a witness called 911 and reported a man in his 40s had gone under the water and did not resurface, according to the Mashpee Fire Department.

Public safety officials have not released any other information about the man's identity.

At about 6:30 p.m., dive teams from the Falmouth, Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills and Cotuit fire departments were searching the pond. A Coast Guard helicopter also helped in the search.

The man was swimming to a boat that was drifting after it had come loose from its mooring, the fire department reported.

The search, which the fire department called a recovery operation, was suspended at about 8:15 p.m. The search for the man's body is expected to continue Sunday morning.
