Mailman Charged With Throwing Away More Than 1,000 Pieces Of Mail

NORTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a U.S. Postal Service mail carrier threw away more than 1,000 pieces of mail addressed to individuals in East Greenwich and North Kingstown.

A federal grand jury on Wednesday indicted Matteo Morelli of Warwick on one count of delaying or destroying mail as a postal employee.

Prosecutors say the local postmaster received complaints about missing mail last month.

Postal Service investigators interviewed Morelli and later found more than 1,000 pieces of mail discarded in a garbage receptacle behind a Warwick school.

The 34-year-old Morelli is scheduled to be arraigned next week.

If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison.

Efforts to reach Morelli on Thursday were unsuccessful.

It was unclear whether he is being represented by an attorney.
