Man Arrested After Police Interrupt Sexual Assault Along Esplanade

BOSTON (CBS) — State Police say they interrupted an apparent sexual assault along the Esplanade early Sunday morning.

The incident happened around 1 a.m. near the Longfellow Bridge.

According to the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office, two troopers were on foot patrol in the area and saw the assault unfolding.

Joseph Barthel, 49, was arrested and charged with indecent assault and battery. He is expected to be arraigned Monday in Boston Municipal Court.

Police do not believe Barthel is linked to a series of unsolved sexual assaults in recent years on the Esplanade.
