Report: Gronkowski To Begin Preseason On PUP List

BOSTON (CBS) - When the New England Patriots kick off their preseason in Philadelphia on August 9, tight end Rob Gronkowski will find himself on the PUP list.

According to NFL.com's Ian Rapoport, Gronkowski will begin the preseason on the physically unable to perform list after an off-season filled with numerous surgeries.

As Raportort noted in his tweet, this was expected. Gronkowski is expected to need 12 weeks to recover from the back surgery he underwent on Tuesday.

The back surgery was Gronkowski's fifth time under the knife since last November. He also underwent four surgeries on his left forearm, which he broke in New England's Week 11 win over the Indianapolis Colts.

The 12 week recovery period brings Gronkowski into the regular season, so there remains a possibility Gronkowski begins the regular season on the PUP list as well.

The Patriots open the regular season on September 8 at Buffalo.

In 43 NFL games, Gronkowski has scored 39 touchdowns for the Patriots.
