Police are now searching for 49-year-old Stanley Pells.

The victim's brother-in-law, Arthur Joia, tells WBZ-TV's Karen Anderson, he got a call from Wanda at 6 a.m. asking for help.

Joia said his sister-in-law told him her husband Stanley had beat her with a hammer, she was able to get the hammer away from him, and he took off.

A family member tells WBZ-TV that Wanda's head was covered with blood, and she had been hit at least three times with the hammer.

She was able to go to a neighbor's house and call police, according to family members.

The family also tells WBZ-TV the couple had been going though "challenging times" trying to get help for their son who is suffering from a mental illness.

Family members say Wanda and Stanley had been married for 25 years with no history of problems.

Stanley works as a school janitor. The couple has two other children who live in the area.

Stanley Pells allegedly left the home on foot and is described as 5'10," 180 pounds, brown eyes, balding, with a dark complexion and mustache.

Pells was last seen wearing blue jeans and no shirt.

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the Mashpee Police Department at 508-539-1480.
