Boston's Bike Safety Report Details Accidents, Causes & Dangerous Roads

BOSTON (CBS) - In an effort to create safer cycling situations around Boston, the city released its report on bicycle safety on Tuesday.

The report stated that despite a significant increase in cyclists on the roads, the number of accidents has held steady.

In all, between 2010 and 2012, Boston police recorded a total of 1,446 incidents that were reported. Nine of those crashes were deadly.

Commonwealth Avenue, Mass Avenue, Beacon Street, Boylston Street and Dorchester Avenue were the roads where the most accidents occurred, according to Boston police records.

The report also cites key factors associated with crashes as bicyclists ignoring red lights or stop signs; drivers or passengers opening car doors into an oncoming cyclist; and drivers not seeing cyclists.

More than 90 percent of crashes that were reported involved motor vehicles, while just 2 percent of accidents involved pedestrians.

The report looks at ridership and cycling incidents over the past four years.

The entire report is available on the City of Boston's website.
