Ducklings Rescued From Dedham Storm Drain

DEDHAM (CBS) -- A trip to a neighborhood diner for breakfast turned into a rescue mission for some residents.

Around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday, residents saw a mother duck frantically pacing around the grate cover of a drain, right off Route 1.

When they looked a little closer, they saw a bunch of ducklings had fallen through the hole.

After those residents called police, fire and animal control, a team from the town's department of public works was finally able to reach the ducklings.

Neil Collins was one of the people who helped rescue the ducklings, he says he's rescued ducklings in the past.

Collins and another woman collected the ducklings into a cardboard box and released the mother duck and her ducklings into a nearby pond.

Once they were back in the water he called it a successful rescue.

"Ten-for-ten," he said.
