WBZ WaterCooler: Former Jockey Darrell Haire On The Kentucky Derby

BOSTON (CBS) - At The WBZ Water Cooler: Former Jockey Darrell Haire, who grew up in Rhode Island, is at Churchill Downs for today's Kentucky Derby.

He won on this track several times, but never the Derby.

The thing is, in his prime he turned down opportunities to run on long shots, with the hopes of getting on a horse with a better chance to win. In the end, that offer never came. Looking back on it, Haire says he would have jumped on one of those long shots, just to get the experience.

He says it's the first thing people ask: Did you run the Kentucky Derby?

The Kentucky Derby "is what horse racing is all about," Haire said.

He says he thought one of his champion horses, Temperance Hill, had a big chance to win the Kentucky Derby, but the horse was not nominated to run.

Haire wishes he could have taken Temperance Hill to Churchill Downs.

All in all though, he thinks this is the best weekend of the year. "There is only one Kentucky Derby, it's just so special," he added.
