WPI, Bentley Make New List Of Schools With Worst Professors

BOSTON (CBS) – Two local schools that made a new list of colleges with the worst professors seem to be taking the list in stride.

Bentley University and Worcester Polytechnic Institute landed in the top 25 on the list compiled by The Center for College Affordability and Productivity.

The survey used teacher ratings from RateMyProfessors.com as one evaluation component.

Art Heinricher, Dean of Undergraduate Studies at WPI says he's concerned about being on the list, but also notes a few major flaws in the rankings.

"A lot of the data that's on there is being used… for faculty that retired three years ago," Heinricher pointed out to WBZ NewsRadio 1030.

Heinricher also notes that the school does its own surveying of students, and that his faculty actually performs better than many other schools in the area.

"It's something that I don't like to hear, but we take it seriously," he said.

A statement from Bentley also noted that their own student evaluations reflect a different result.

"Our top concern is whether we are preparing our students for a successful career and rewarding life once they leave Bentley. Our successful job placement data and other indicators tell us we are," the statement said in part.

Bentley also took the opportunity to take a shot at the validity of the RateMyProfessors.com rankings.

"There is a best and worst list for everything these days and we need to keep it all in perspective. A ranking that assesses "hotness" and "easiness" of professors speaks for itself," the statement said.
