Ex-Lawrence School Chief Ordered To Repay $10K

LAWRENCE (AP) — A former Lawrence school superintendent has been ordered to repay $10,000 after being convicted of using school resources for himself.

The Essex District Attorney's office said a judge set the restitution for Wilfredo Laboy on Wednesday in Lawrence Superior Court. The amount was based on an agreement between prosecutors and Laboy's attorney.

A jury convicted Laboy in March 2012 of fraud and embezzlement, finding he used school employees for tasks such as electrical work at his home, driving his son around and disposing of his trash. Laboy apologized in court and said he took responsibility for his "poor decisions."

He was sentenced to 90 days in jail and a year of house arrest, followed by 2 years' probation.

Laboy was superintendent in Lawrence for about a decade before being fired in 2010.
