2013 Boston Marathon: Winners And Finishers

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — 23,181 runners left Hopkinton Monday morning with the goal of finishing the 117th Boston Marathon. Many of them did, but there were just two winners.

Lelisa Desisa of Ethiopia won the men's race in three-way sprint down Boylston Street to finish in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 22 seconds.

Rita Jeptoo won the women's race for her second Boston victory, finishing in 2:26:25.

Marblehead's Shalane Flanagan was the top American finisher, coming in fourth place in her first Boston Marathon.

A year after heat approaching 90 degrees sent record numbers of participants in search of medical help, temperatures in the high 40's greeted the field at the start in Hopkinton. It climbed to 54 degrees by the time the winners reached Copley Square in Boston.

2,200 runners deferred to this year's marathon due to the hot weather last year.

Race day got started with 26 seconds of silence in honor of the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

Japan's Hiroyuki Yamamoto was the first winner of the day, cruising to victory in the men's wheelchair race by 39 seconds over nine-time champion Ernst Van Dyk of South Africa.

Tatyana McFadden, a Russian orphan who attends the University of Illinois, won the women's race.

Two-time Boston Marathon winner Joan Benoit Samuelson reached her goal of finishing the marathon within 30 minutes of her winning time from 30 years ago. She finished in 2:50:37.
