UMass Student Injured In 80-Foot Fall At Sugar Loaf State Park

SOUTH DEERFIELD (CBS) - A 20-year-old University of Massachusetts student suffered serious injuries Saturday when he fell about 80 feet at Sugar Loaf State Park, police said.

Deerfield Police Sgt. Harry Ruddock told CBS the young man was hiking with fraternity brothers when he fell. The student was too close to a steep slope and slipped, Ruddock said.

After the park rescue, the student was airlifted to UMass Medical Center in Worcester for treatment of injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Ruddock said alcohol was not considered a factor in the incident.

Several emergency workers were dispatched to help rescue the student, including the Greenfield High-Angle Extrication Team.
