Mayor Menino In Hospital After Suffering Broken Leg

BOSTON (CBS) - Mayor Menino is back in the hospital after breaking his leg on Friday.

WBZ-TV's Jon Keller confirmed that Menino suffered a broken right leg during an event Friday morning at the Joseph Lee School.

Menino apparently didn't immediately realize the extent of the injury.

It wasn't until the afternoon that the leg began swelling and his doctor urged him to go to the hospital.

The mayor is at Brigham and Women's Hospital and is expected to undergo surgery on Saturday.

"The Mayor is obviously frustrated, but in good spirits," said Menino's spokeswoman Dot Joyce. "He is taking it in stride and making jokes with the nurses."

The injury is to his fibula. He's expected to have screws and possibly a plate inserted during the surgery, which will require anesthesia.

A broken leg is the latest in a series of health problems Menino has faced.

The mayor recently spent eight weeks hospitalized for a respiratory infection and a blood clot followed by a spinal fracture and diabetes.
