Somerville Students Invited To Garden With First Lady Michelle Obama At White House

SOMERVILLE (CBS) - Some local kids are getting ready for a once in a lifetime experience; a trip to the White House.

And they're going to get their hands dirty, and at the same time, help the First Lady spread the message of healthy eating.

The five lucky, fifth graders are from Somerville's Arthur D. Healey School.

They're being rewarded for their hard work on the school's vegetable garden.

"I like to plant vegetables because sometimes you get to try them," says Ariana Docanto, one of the students who will go to DC to help Michelle Obama plant the kitchen garden on the South Lawn of the White House.

It's all part of her initiative to combat childhood obesity.

"When I heard we were going, I cried because I was very emotional, I was happy," says Gabriela Lopez.

It's the 5th year Mrs. Obama has invited children to be part of the nutritious fun.

"I am really excited because this might be my life memory, to ever get a chance to meet Michelle Obama," says Brian Chan.

The Healey School and others from Vermont, Florida and Tennessee were chosen because of the improvements they've made in their lunch and nutrition education programs, which dovetail perfectly with the first Lady's message.

"I think it's really worthwhile and I think it's a great idea, and it's a great cause," says 5th grader Lana Popovic.

And who knows, maybe the veggies they plant will end up on the Presidential plate.

"I heard from different people that he does eat what he gardens in his backyard," says Ariana Docanto.

"Kids need to eat healthier. It's just better for us," adds Sarah Sweeting.

The trip happens Thursday and WBZ's Paula Ebben is the only Boston reporter invited for the White House visit. Paula will have exclusive access to the Somerville students' visit, and will be the only Boston reporter to sit down one-on-one with Michelle Obama.

You'll be able to see it all on WBZ-TV, starting at 5 p.m. on Thursday.
