98.5 The Sports Hub's 'Cuts For A Cause' Raises $76K For Pediatric Cancer Care

BOSTON (CBS) - Nearly every member of the Boston Bruins received very short haircuts on Monday, but they all got their cuts for a cause.

18 Bruins took part in the 6th Annual "Cuts For A Cause" hosted by 98.5 The Sports Hub's Toucher & Rich with Bruins forward Shawn Thornton at Royale in Boston, raising $76,000 for various charities to support pediatric cancer care -- nearly $20,000 more than last year's event.

Last week, Bruins fans and Sports Hub listeners placed bids to shave the head of their favorite players, raising over $12,000 in the process. The 18 members of the Bruins to shed their locks are the most to participate in the event's six year history.

"We have a pretty tight team, we always have. But for those guys to step up is huge," Thornton said after "This year we're going to raise the most ever, so I'm very happy it's a success again, and keeps getting bigger and bigger."

The Sports Hub's Fred Toucher and John Wallach got haircuts for charity as well.

"I really do feel great, and really do appreciate all the people that came out. Even if you didn't come out but maybe bid on a player and raised the price, I want to thank everyone" said Fred Toucher. "It's a great cause and a great event."

"I was scared out of my mind when I sat in the chair," said Wallach after receiving his first haircut at the event. "After it was done it felt alright. I have enough people lying to me telling me it looks good, so I'll go home with some confidence before my wife laughs at me."

"He, unfortunately, doesn't look funny enough," Fred said of Wallach's new look.

Various winners got to give their favorite Bruin a buzz cut, with many of them passing the honors along to one of the young patients from Floating Hospital for Children in attendance. Bauer hockey made a $5,000 bid on Brad Marchand, and then passed the shears to a young B's fan.

"Seeing the kids up there when they get to shave our heads (is the best part)," said Thornton. "They're all smiles and they get a kick out of it."

Two hundred VIP tickets and 450 general admission tickets sold for the event.

"In the middle of the afternoon on a Monday, that's pretty impressive. Hopefully we can just keep getting bigger and bigger and raise more and more money every year," said Thornton.

All proceeds earned will be donated to the Shawn Thornton Foundation, the Boston Bruins Foundation and Floating Hospital for Children at Tufts Medical Center.
