Waltham Police Officer Arrested On Child Porn Charges

WALTHAM (CBS) - A Waltham Police officer was in federal court Tuesday afternoon to face child pornography charges.

The FBI arrested Paul Manganelli at his home in Waltham Monday.

Court documents show police came across Manganelli's emails while investigating a child porn case in Australia last year.

In one email, police say Manganelli wrote:

"I absolutely love little girls ages 7 to 11. Such a great age," he wrote. "I am trying to organize everything and stay private at the same time. Don't want to get caught."

Court documents show emails where Manganelli admitted he inappropriately touched a girl while wrestling with her.

"The alleged off-duty conduct of one employee is not a reflection of the Waltham Police Department as a whole. The Waltham Police Department is dedicated to continuing the professional service that the city of Waltham has grown to expectand deserve. We continue to protect and serve the community while maintaining the continued high professional standard that is expected of every one of our officers," Acting Police Chief Keith MacPherson said in a statement to WBZ-TV.

Manganelli won a $1 million prize in the Mass Lottery on April 19, 2011, in the "$100,000 a Year for Life" instant game.

He's also a DJ and the owner of P & M Sound in Waltham.

Waltham Mayor Jeannette McCarthy released a statement Tuesday afternoon noting the allegations against Manganelli should not reflect on other officers.

"The allegations are disgusting. My thoughts are with his family. There are a lot of dedicated Waltham Police Officers who should not be negatively impacted by this," McCarthy said.

This is the second major incident in a year involving a member of the Waltham Police Department.

Former chief Thomas LaCroix was arrested last June for allegedly attacking his wife.

WBZ-TV's Christina Hager contributed to this report.
