Keller @ Large: What Did We Do To Deserve This?

BOSTON (CBS) - Do you believe that bad weather is tied to bad karma?

If so, then after a week of some of the winter's worst weather – including snow, sleet, hail, rain, ice, black ice, high wind, bitter cold, and, depending on where you live, plagues of rats, lice and locusts – all capping one of the worst winters on record, it's time to start discussing a terrible question: what did we do to deserve this?

To answer this, we have to know more about Mother Nature and what forms of human behavior might possibly move her to do this to us.

If she is a sports fan, then we have to look at our local teams as possible provocations.

Certainly, the Red Sox were an embarrassment last year, and if Mama Nature is part of Red Sox nation, that could explain her fury. Perhaps she also knew in advance about the Welker debacle.

There's no evidence that Mother Nature cares about local politics, but there's also no proof that she doesn't. Perhaps her devotion to ecological balance is offended by the gross imbalance of Massachusetts politics, where no Republicans need apply.

Then again, if it's dysfunctional politics that invokes her wrath, how did Washington D.C. get away with a relatively mild winter?

But let's not overthink this. The explanation could be simple. Mother Nature is everywhere; could it be that on one of her frontal trips through Massachusetts, she was tailgated and cut off at a rotary?

Sounds probable to me, and on behalf of all the guilty parties, Mother, I apologize.

Now please – make it stop!
