Leon Washington Signs With Patriots

BOSTON (CBS) -- Social media sure does change how news gets broken these days.

Leon Washington played the role of football player and reporter on Thursday and broke the news that he is a member of the New England Patriots.

At least, that was the logical conclusion to jump to from the photo Washington posted on Instagram, in which he's wearing a Patriots hat. The caption he wrote to accompany the photo read, "#Blessed Lets Go #Pats."

Moments later, the Patriots officially announced the deal, without disclosing the details of the contract.

Earlier in the day, after it was reported that he was in New England for a visit, he tweeted, "Negotiations!!!"

Washington, who will turn 31 before the 2013 season begins, will likely serve as a punt returner for the Patriots, with Julian Edelman still unsigned and Wes Welker now gone to Denver. Washington has returned 41 punts in each of the past two seasons, averaging 10 yards per return. He also returned 27 kickoffs last season, including one for a touchdown.

Washington played a minor role as a running back last season, gaining 83 yards and scoring a touchdown on 23 carries while catching four passes out of the backfield for 31 yards.
