Drunk Driving Stop Leads To Drug Bust In Hingham

HINGHAM (CBS) – An arrest for drunk driving turned into a much bigger bust on Saturday night.

At 8:42 p.m., police in Hingham saw a vehicle swerve off the right side of High St. and strike a snow bank before continuing down the road.

When police tried to pull the driver over, he kept going, making a left turn onto Ward St. and traveling 60 mph in a 30 mph zone.

Eventually, the driver stopped and police noticed alcohol on his breath.

The driver, 20-year-old Stephen Conte, was arrested for driving under the influence and failure to stop for a police officer.

After taking Conte into custody, officers noticed more than an ounce of marijuana on the floor of the driver’s side.

Upon further inspections, officers found an empty bottle of whiskey and a backpack containing two digital scales, a grinder, a pipe, two plastic jars containing 5.7 ounces of marijuana, four oxycodone pills, and a large empty freezer bag. They also found $3,500 in cash.

Conte refused to submit to sobriety tests at the police station, and was later released.

He is set to be arraigned for both the drunk driving and drug charges on Monday.
