South Boston Man Arrested For Driving Drunk With Toddlers In Backseat

HINGHAM (CBS) - Police say a 39-year-old South Boston man had his three toddlers in the backseat of his car when he crashed into a taxi while drunk Sunday afternoon.

Police were called to Shipyard Drive shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday after witnesses saw a 1999 Toyota Land Cruiser smash into an empty taxi and take off.

When police pulled the car over, they say Jonathan H. Barrett, was unable to work the controls in order to lower his window.

His three children ages 1, 2, and 2 years old, were in child safety seats in the backseat.

Police found a half-empty bottle of vodka wedged between two of the child safety seats.

Barrett was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol, three counts of child endangerment, driving to endanger, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while an open container of alcohol and marked lanes violation.

The children were taken from the scene by a family member, police said.

Barrett was arraigned Monday in Hingham District Court.
