Earned master’s degree in religious education and Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese literature from Catholic University of America
Founded Hispanic Catholic Center in Washington, DC
1985-1992 Bishop of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands
1992-2002 Bishop of Fall River
2002-2003 Bishop of Palm Beach, Florida
July 2003-present Archbishop of Boston
2006 Pope Benedict XVI names him a Cardinal
2011 Benedict appoints him to lead review of response to sexual abuse by the Archdiocese of Dublin
