  • Professed into the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin at age 21
  • Ordained a Catholic priest at age 26.
  • Earned master’s degree in religious education and Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese literature from Catholic University of America
  • Founded Hispanic Catholic Center in Washington, DC
  • 1985-1992 Bishop of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands
  • 1992-2002 Bishop of Fall River
  • 2002-2003 Bishop of Palm Beach, Florida
  • July 2003-present Archbishop of Boston
  • 2006 Pope Benedict XVI names him a Cardinal
  • 2011 Benedict appoints him to lead review of response to sexual abuse by the Archdiocese of Dublin
