Billerica Sixth Grader Petitions For Return To Old Grading System

BILLERICA (CBS) - A Billerica sixth grader wants all the schools in town to return to the alphabet grading system.

A's, B's, C's and D's have been replaced by numbers 1-through-4.  Administrators also did away with the honor roll.

Sixth grader Jacob Burke was not happy with the change so he took things into his own hands.

The 11-year-old started a petition at lunch, asking the school to return to the old grading system.  He got 150 kids to sign during one lunch period.

His mom Deb Burke will present the petition at a school committee meeting Monday night.

"We're creating a group of mediocrity," Deb Burke told WBZ NewsRadio 1030. "We are creating a lot of Indians and no chiefs."

So far, Burke has collected more than 500 parents signatures online.
