Polar Plunge Participants Take A Frigid Swim In The Atlantic

FALMOUTH (CBS) - While the temperatures were mild for January in New England, some brave souls decided to test the waters of the Atlantic with a good cause in mind on Saturday.

Over 50 people gathered at Old Silver Beach in Falmouth to take part in the annual Polar Plunge for the Troops, with more than 100 spectators watching.

Participants were sponsored to get in the water, with the goal of raising money for the Falmouth Military Support Group. The group in turn purchases phone cards, iTunes gift cards, and funds a scholarship for returning veterans from Cape Cod.

The Plunge began in 2009 and has increased in popularity, from 12 participants and $2,300 raised in its first year to 45 participants and $7,000 raised in 2012.
