LYNN, Mass. (AP) — Former Massachusetts House Speaker Thomas McGee will be remembered at a memorial service in his home city of Lynn.
McGee died on Dec. 21 at the age of 88.
The Democrat was elected to the House in 1962 and rose to speaker in 1975. He served five terms in the leadership post until being ousted after a bitter contest with his former majority leader, Rep. George Keverian, who sought to reform House rules.
A former Marine who served in World War II, McGee was credited with helping win passage of important environmental, human service and consumer protection legislation during his time as speaker.
A memorial service for McGee was scheduled for Saturday at St. Mary’s Church. A private burial service has already been held.
