BOSTON (CBS) – All lanes of Interstate 93 south in the O’Neill Tunnel were shut down briefly late Monday morning because of a tractor-trailer fire.
Check: Traffic Updates
It happened near the Purchase Street exit just before 11:30 a.m.
MassDOT Highway Adminstrator Frank DePaola told WBZ-TV the driver pulled over because the truck’s engine was on fire.
The southbound side of the tunnel was closed and the fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes.
The tunnel’s ventilation system was turned up to a higher speed to remove the smoke, DePaola said.
According to the Boston Fire Department, the truck was carrying cardboard.
No injuries were reported.
The truck was towed away around 12:30 p.m., but there were still residual traffic delays.
