The Sumner Tunnel was closed for inspections between 9 p.m. Sunday night and 5 a.m. Monday morning.
BOSTON (CBS) – The Sumner Tunnel will close at 9 p.m. Sunday night so Massachusetts Department of Transportation workers can inspect the safety of the wall panels.
The inspections began after a wall panel fell into the roadway in the Callahan Tunnel on Dec. 21.
MassDOT shut the Callahan Tunnel down last Sunday and found 117 loose panels.
MassDOT says the issue of corrosion and aging infrastructure is a problem statewide but they’re doing what they can to keep the public safe.
Sunday’s scheduled closure of the Sumner will test similar panels for potential problems.
The tunnel will close at 9 p.m. Sunday and open by 5 a.m. Monday.
