NStar Warns Electricity Customers About 'Green Dot' Payment Scam

BOSTON (CBS) – NStar issued a warning Wednesday about a growing scam that's targeting its electricity customers.

Potential thieves claiming to be from NStar have been calling people telling them their electricity could be disconnected immediately unless they purchase a Green Dot pre-paid card.

NStar described the scam in a statement:

"The caller tells the customer their electricity will be shut off if they don't make a payment within one to four hours. The caller then tells the customer they can only pay using a Green Dot card that can be purchased at local pharmacies and retail stores. A callback number is provided and, from there, the scammer walks the customer through the entire payment process."

NStar says all the reports they have received have detailed similar scenarios.NStar is reminding customers not to provide any information or proceed with the payment if they feel they are targeted.
