Mass. Bill To Legalize Online Wine Shopping Squashed Again
BOSTON (CBS) – Wine aficionados in Massachusetts will not be able to shop online any time soon for their favorite vintage.
The State House News Service reports that a proposal on Beacon Hill allowing wine deliveries from out of state was gutted and replaced with new legislation.
The new law that was passed Thursday allows charities to auction off wine instead.
The original bill would have allowed out-of-state wineries to ship their products to Massachusetts customers. It would have limited shipment to 24 cases per address per year.
Lawmakers who opposed the legislation said the decision could hurt local businesses.
A U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 2006 determined the bans were unconstitutional. However, Massachusetts is one of 12 states that still does not allow out-of-state wine shipments.
