NH Hunter To Face Charges Over Illegal Trap That Killed Dog
AUBURN, NH (CBS) - A New Hampshire hunter whose hunting trap killed a dog this week is expected to face charges.
On Wednesday, Melissa Fogelson took her 4-year-old dog Andrew for a walk in the Auburn Watershed area.
At some point, the dog put his head in the trap, and wound up suffocating.
"He went over to check out something at the end of a downed tree," Fogelson said. "I just heard a pop, he let out a little cry, and I just couldn't get it off of him."
She said she has been reliving the incident constantly since it happened.
"It was awful. There's no other word for it," she added.
Officials say the hunter did not have a permit for the trap, and violated several other trapping laws.
Fish and game officials told her a tool is typically needed to open the trap.
Fogelson said it took two officers to pry it open with their hands.
The trapper's name has not been released because formal charges have not yet been filed.
