Community Servings Deliver More Than Meals To Those In Need In Eastern Mass.

BOSTON (CBS) - "Delivering meals delivering hope," that's the motto of Community Servings.

The organization has been feeding thousands of critically ill people in the Boston area for 22 years, and without that help, some of them would have nowhere else to turn.

On a typical morning at Community Servings' Jamaica Plain kitchen, the volunteer crew is on the job, chopping, peeling and preparing meals for people who can't always do that for themselves.

"We love coming because we feel like we're part of the team here, too. The Community Servings people welcome us," says volunteer Maryanne Basler.

With the help of about 50 volunteers a day, Community Servings delivers meals to about 1300 people every year.

"You know that these are people who are really in need, and this organization depends on volunteers to come in and help them on a daily basis and I'm more than happy to do that and help them out," says Mike Tantillo, another volunteer.

During their 20-plus year history the organization has provided over 5-million meals to people who are sick.

"Every day we go out across 18 communities in eastern Massachusetts to bring beautifully prepared meals that are specifically tailored to the medical regimens of somebody going through cancer, kidney treatments, HIV, diabetes," says David Waters, the CEO of Community Servings.

People like Loretta Smith, Diabetic and subject to seizures, she's unable to work.

"Once a week they bring 5 daily meals. It could vary, salads pasta," says Smith.

Most of the people Community Servings helps are homebound and don't see other people on a regular basis.

"It's good to know that someone's there to help you," says Smith.

"As you're struggling with an illness, you're scared and worried, and if we can bring a sense of love and solace through the food, then it's a tremendous gift the community gives," says David Waters of Community Servings.
