Fall River Man Breaks Leg After Fleeing Police

FALL RIVER (AP) — Massachusetts State police say a Fall River man has ended up in the hospital with a broken leg after fleeing police.

State police said the episode began around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday when 25-year-old Cleveland Clay rammed two Fall River police cruisers trying to avoid arrest. They put out an alert for him, and Westport police briefly pursued him.

State police say Clay later crashed the 1998 Lincoln Continental he was driving on Interstate 195 at Route 24, and tried to cross the highway on foot. A pickup truck struck him, breaking his leg.

Police said that driver, unaware Clay was a fugitive, offered to drive him to a hospital. Meanwhile, another motorist reported a man being struck by the pickup. A state trooper stopped the truck and arrested Clay. He was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.
