Suspicious Weymouth Fire Is 18th South Shore Fire In Past 2 Months

WEYMOUTH (CBS) - An abandoned building on the South Shore went up in flames early Sunday morning and investigators say it may be related to a recent string of fires there.

The building on Route 18 in Weymouth is not far from the Abington line, but is now burned out and blackened.

Investigators have confirmed that this fire is the 18th arson fire in the past two months in an unoccupied building south of Boston.

"The preliminary investigation would lead us to believe that it is an intentionally set fire," said State Fire Marshall Stephen Coan.

"We're not in a position at this time to either rule in or rule out that this building is connected to the series of unsolved fires that have occurred in the southeastern part of the state, but suffice it to say, it was a set fire in a vacant building."

The fire started around 2 a.m., like most of the other fires.

Investigators are asking that anyone who has any information about this fire, or any of the others, give them a call.
