Beverly Mourns Student Lost In Maine Plane Crash

BEVERLY (CBS) - The town of Beverly is mourning the death of a college student who died in a plane crash in Maine.

Police say three University of Maine students, including 22-year-old David Cheney of Beverly, died when the plane they were in crashed at Knox County Regional Airport.

Investigators say the plane was taking off from the runway when it struck a pickup truck.

"We do know the Sessna was trying to take off and ended up impacting the truck, going air born, then crashing in the woods on the side of the road," Airport Manager Jeff Northgraves said.

It's still unclear what went wrong.

The driver of the pick-up, a pilot who had just put his plane away, was not hurt.

Folks in David's hometown of Beverly says his death has devastated this community.

"Oh, I remember Dave, with his beautiful smile. He was a very good kid," one neighbor said.

David was a senior at University of Maine and studying business.

The FAA and NTSB are investigating the crash.
