PLYMOUTH, Mass. (AP) — Massachusetts environmental officials have announced the completion of a small stream restoration they say can have a significant impact.

State environmental chief Rick Sullivan announced Friday that contractors are completing the restoration of Lower Wellingsley Brook. The coldwater stream drains into Plymouth Harbor. Wild brook trout and other freshwater fish have been documented in the region.

The $90,000 restoration project was supported by a citizen’s petition from 29 residents. The work included removing three small dams and invasive plants. They also replaced native species and removed trash.

The director of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s habitat conservation office said the project is among several that aim to restore habitats for migratory fish in the Gulf of Maine.
