DPH Shuts Down Another Compounding Pharmacy After Random Checks

WALTHAM (CBS/AP) - The Department of Public Health has revoked the license of another compounding pharmacy in the state.

In a press conference Sunday, DPH's Dr. Madeleine Biondolillo said Infusion Resources on Hickory Drive in Waltham was found to be producing medication in non-sterile environments and giving injections on site. The pharmacy did not have a license to give out injections.

Biondolillo said the violations were found after an unannounced inspection of the pharmacy last Tuesday.

She would not identify the drugs or say what specific issues investigators found, but they were concerned about sterility. The company mixes medication for people who have been released from hospitals.

The company has agreed to contact 40 patients and their doctors and ask them to return any unused medication. Biondolillo says there is no indication any medication the company compounded is unsafe.

The DPH says they will continue their unannounced inspections of other pharmacies in the state.

DPH stepped up oversight of the pharmacies after a nation-wide meningitis outbreak linked to Framingham-based New England Compounding Center.
