Skating Rink To Open On Worcester Common Nov. 30

WORCESTER (CBS) - After a three-year wait, the city will open an outdoor ice rink on the Worcester Common.

The city announced Monday, the rink will open on Friday, Nov. 30 during the Annual Festival of Lights. The rink will be open every weekend in December, January and February and for holidays and school vacation weeks. Exhibitions and skate-a-thons are planned.

Named the Worcester Common Oval, the 12,000 square-foot rink will be larger than the rink at Rockefeller Center and have music, skate rentals, lockers, concessions and holiday lights.

The rink uses new technology to keep the ice frozen even if temperatures outdoors reach 75 degrees.

"The rink is yet another success story for our Downtown. It will be beautiful and first-class," said City Manager Michael O'Brien. "I am grateful to those in the community who continue to recognize the potential of our great City and step up time and time again to make things happen."

The rink was built by a private-public partnership including lead sponsor Fallon Community Health Plan.

Admission is $2, skate rentals are extra. Organizers are using the Worcester Common Oval Facebook page to update the public.
