BOSTON (CBS) – John Farrell will manage the Boston Red Sox next season.
He’ll take over as the team’s 46th manager after two season in Toronto.
Pitcher David Carpenter will join Farrell in coming to Boston, with the Red Sox sending shortstop Mike Aviles to the Blue Jays.
Fans seemed to be pleased with the move after the team finished under .500 with Bobby Valentine at the helm.
“John Farrell knew the ins and outs of Fenway. They should have hired him in the first place,” one fan said.
“He’s a good choice. Get Valentine out of there, bring in new people. Get rid of Cherington, too,” another fan added.
The unusual trade will bring Farrell back to Boston, where he served as the team’s pitching coach from 2007 to 2010.
