NASHUA, N.H. (CBS) – Fourteen-year-old Deepika Kurup is this year’s winner of Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge.

Kurup’s creation uses solar power to disinfect contaminated water.

More than a billion people don’t have access to clean water so her invention could be a game changer.

She beat out nine other finalist and won the title America’s Top Young Scientist and got a check for $25,000.
